Kyle was relieved. Compared to the savagery of his previous beatings this was nothing. Sure, he was chained for the first time and his wrists were a little sore from hanging above his head, numb from the lack of blood circulation; and this water dripping onto the centre of his head was making him pretty wet, but things were looking up. Heâd avoided another beating.
But the water cascade wasnât abating. Quite annoying. And he was cold.
Pat, pat, pat, pat.
The slow, regular, predictable timing of every drip.
Pat, pat, pat, pat.
Exactly the same weight of each and every drop.
Pat, pat, pat, pat.
Exactly the same spot on the very centre of the crown of his head.
Pat, pat, pat, pat.
A drop of water only weighs a few grams, thought Kyle. This is boring. Annoying, but theyâll come to turn it off soon.
Pat, pat, pat, pat.
Kyle anticipated the water drops, just before they landed. He knew the timing well. It was consistent. Unrelenting. Heâd seen water damage at his parentsâ house. He recalled the hole in the concrete patio that a dripping hose had created in their back garden. He wondered if the water drops might be able to break his skull.
Pat, pat, pat, pat.
The drops felt heavier. He strained at the shackles. No give. Fixed fast. His neck and his wrists hurt. He felt panic creeping up inside him. He heard a silent scream beginning down at his feet and building to a crescendo through his body.
Pat, pat, pat, pat.
Helpless. His muscles tingled with the feeling of frustrated inertia. He accepted there was no possibility, no hope of escape. And the water droplets kept falling.
Those evil bastards. What have I done to deserve this? Chinese Water Torture. So clichéd, so old fashioned. So utterly effective. And driving me insane.
Pat, pat, pat, pat.
But what if Iâm already insane? Pat. Already. Pat. Gone. Pat. Totally. Pat. Bloody. Pat. Insane.
The scream arrived. It was loud, savage in tone. A wounded soul. Animalistic. Basic. The emptying of a vessel overflowing with pain.
Pat, pat, pat, pat.
His screaming continued. Howls echoing around the dark cellar, feeding from each other. The mind being torn from its own sense of self, a dismantling of the balance between perspective and reality.
Pat, pat, pat, pat.
